Metabolic and infectious diseases of post partum cows

By our know-how, we commit ourselves to help you acquire the method necessary for the diagnostic of metabolic dysfunctions in cows post partum.
.
The period of transition is marked by alimentary, metabolic and immunologic alterations which may contribute to infections and metabolic diseases.
Some of endocrine alterations in this period such as the decrease in thyroxine and leptine concentrations, the appearance of insulin-resistance seem to be related to lipomobilisation (Bloc, 2001 ; Accorsi, 2005 ; Pires, 2007).
All these changes can lead to diseases of periparturient cows (Gogg, 2002). By nature, the cows in this period undergo a situation of immunodepression which predispose to infectious diseases like metritis and mastitis (Kehrli, 2001). Cows presenting such disturbances in early lactation produce less milk and cause economic losses (Drakley, 1999).
.
Symptoms of hepatic lipidosis:
-       Displaced abomasums
-       Underproduction
-       Milk fever – downer cow syndrome
-       Retained placenta
-       Metritis
-       Ketosis, excessive loss of weight
-       Mastitis
-       Altered immune reactivity

How to diagnose without liver biopsy:
Glucose
BOH
NEFA
Haptoglobin
GGT
Cholesterol
Bilirubine
Calcium
Phosphorus
Magnesium
T4

Fat cow syndrome: generator of post partum diseases and obstacle to good milk production

There are downer cows which do not respond to “classical” treatments. In order to help you to treat these “special cases”, we propose to you diagnostic steps to follow and products to treat.

The downer cow study 2009

With this study, we would like to determine the occurrence of insulino-resistance and hepatic lipidosis in downer cows. At the same time, it is designed to attract your attention to some origins less known although being important origins of this syndrome as well. Actually, besides a hypokalemia which appears in a cow that stops brutally to feed, intense lipomobilization and insulin-resistance of type 2 can be responsible to hyperglycemia and metabolic deregulation.

We propose you to conduct free analysis of T4, Insulin, NEFA, Cholesterol, Calcium, Magnesium, Phosphorus, Bilirubin, GGT, Index of lipidosis and insulin-resistance of your individual downer cows.

As you do habitually, you will dose Glycemia, ß-Hydroxybutyrate and urine pH. Thank you to communicate these results to us, together with your observation of the clinic exam and send the blood to us (serum in one tube and héparinized blood in the other, taken before any treatment). Shipment and sample taking will be of your charge. We only include cows in this study of which we dispose complete information concerning clinical examination and results of Glycemia, BOH and urine pH. Forms to accompany your samples can be downloaded here.

Multiple occurrences of post partum metabolic diseases

If you are confronted at a fat cow syndrome on herd level and the subsequent disorders (retained placenta, LDA, metritis, ketosis, poor fertility, mastitis,…), we propose to conduct an investigation of 5 cows in very early lactation.  The form to accompany your samples and a questionnary to collect all information necessary can be downloaded here.

OD NEFA

This supplement has been elaborated for the specific needs of fat cows, goats and sheep in the peripartal period. It contributes to stop the insulin-resistance, decrease hepatic lipidosis and to cope with oxidative stress.

It can be administered either by drenching an individual animal or by adding it to the feed in the peripartal period. Don’t hesitate to contact us for further information. For more product information, click here.
